Iceland to Go Plastic-Free on Own Label Packaging

UK frozen food specialist Iceland has announced plans to eliminate plastic packaging from all its own brand products by the end of 2023. The five-year programme will start immediately, with the imminent launch of two new ready meal ranges, which will be packaged in trays made from paper and pulp.

Tesco Launches Plant-Based Private Label Range

Tesco has launched ‘Wicked Kitchen’, a range of 20 plant-based dishes, which will be sold in 600 stores from this week. The range was developed by Derek Sarno, former Global Executive Chef for Whole Foods Market, who is now working for Tesco PLC.

Lidl Sets Sights On Biggest UK Warehouse

Lidl has announced that it is planning its largest warehouse to date in the UK. The site in Luton will be double the size of any of the retailer’s existing UK distribution centres. Lidl also announced that it will open a further five stores in London in the next two months.

Co-op UK Launches EUR195mn Expansion Plan

UK convenience retailer Co-op Group plans to invest EUR195mn to open 100 new food stores and give a major overhaul to a further 150 outlets in 2018. Separately, the retailer announced an online collaboration with bed and mattress manufacturer Silentnight.

UK Wholesaler Palmer & Harvey McLane Limited (P&H) has gone into administration, following the collapse of talks over a rescue takeover by investment group Carlyle. The breakdown of talks and insufficient cash to trade beyond the short term has left the company’s directors with no further options.

Co-op Takeover of Nisa Gets Go-Ahead

Members of UK convenience chain Nisa have voted in favour of a takeover by The Co-operative Group. Nisa’s board recommended the deal last month and now 75.79% of shareholder votes are in favour of the deal, which means the takeover will now be passed to competition authorities for approval.
