Domestic supermarkets are the new retail stars in discount-dominated Poland. Despite intensifying price battles, these proximity banners are expected to open almost 3 stores for every new discounter over the next 5 years.
Polish Emperia Group, operator of proximity banner Stokrotka, plans to double the pace of new store opening for 2018. As the retailer announced in a press release, the chain is targeting more than 100 new stores this year, from 65 net openings in 2017.
Eurocash Group, the largest Polish wholesale operator, has given the green light to roll out its Duży Ben (‘Big Ben’) liquor store pilot concept on a national level. The banner, to date comprising 12 wholly-owned outlets in and around the city of Poznań in Western Poland, will be further developed through franchises.
