Hungarian retail cooperative CBA is continuing to sell off part of its store network to multinational operators. Lidl, Aldi and Auchan have all been among the ranks of bidders for retail outlets located in Budapest and the surrounding area.

Emperia to Double Store Openings

Polish Emperia Group, operator of proximity banner Stokrotka, plans to double the pace of new store opening for 2018. As the retailer announced in a press release, the chain is targeting more than 100 new stores this year, from 65 net openings in 2017.

Croatian Tommy Poised to Take Over Agrokor's Konzum

Croatian regional retailer Tommy may become a minority owner of Agrokor’s Konzum chain, the country’s leading grocer. As news portal Slobodna Dalmacija reveals, a Croatian supplier consortium intends to take over Konzum in cooperation with Tommy as a strategic partner.

Eurocash Develops Duży Ben Liquor Stores

Eurocash Group, the largest Polish wholesale operator, has given the green light to roll out its Duży Ben (‘Big Ben’) liquor store pilot concept on a national level. The banner, to date comprising 12 wholly-owned outlets in and around the city of Poznań in Western Poland, will be further developed through franchises.

Magnit CEO Galitskiy Steps Down

Magnit, the second-largest Russian grocery retailer, has announced the resignation of its long-time CEO, founder and minority-owner Sergey Galitskiy. Following the halving of the company's market capitalisation within the last few months, state-controlled VTB bank has bought a minority share of 29.1% in the company from Galitskiy.

Intertorg Targets 100 New Stores in 2018

Intertorg, the Spar franchisee for Russia's North-West and Central federal districts, plans to increase its store count by more than 100 outlets in 2018. At the same time the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) is reviewing market shares, possibly imposing expansion bans for federal retailers in these areas.

Eurotorg Revives Russian Online Grocery Banner

Belarusian privately-owned market leader Eurotorg plans to re-establish its online banner E-Dostavka in Russia. The service will initially be available in Moscow, with a roll-out to other major cities planned in the medium term. Investment for the project is estimated at USD50-80mn.

Biedronka Records Strong Growth

Discounter chain Biedronka strengthened its market leadership in Poland in 2017 thanks to the opening of more than 100 new stores. It almost doubled net openings versus 2016, reversing the deceleration trend observed in recent years.
