Proximity supermarkets are the new stars in discount-led Poland, outpacing Lidl, Biedronka & co.
Domestic proximity supermarkets are the new stars in discount-dominated Poland. The lead banners in this segment – Dino, Delikatesy Centrum, Polomarket and Stokrotka – together opened more than 720 stores over the past three years, which equates to two new supermarkets for each new discount outlet opened.

This ratio is expected to rise to 2.8 by 2022, a notable achievement in a retail landscape shaped by some of Europe’s most sophisticated discount concepts. Biedronka, Lidl, Netto (Dansk Supermarked) and Aldi (Nord) jointly held 29.3% market share in Poland in 2017 and are steadily evolving in the direction of the supermarket format. Nevertheless, Dino & co. are forecasted to open 1,570 more shops by 2022.

Are proximity supermarkets the long sought-after remedy against discount supremacy?
